Keep your stone clean but oiled. A dirty stone full of grit and metal filings is
disagreeable and makes for an unpleasant experience. Sharpening one's
blade should be pleasant, it should be meditative, a rewarding act in and
of itself. In this way, you will want to do it again and again; your blade will be
ready for you when you need to use it.
