Maestro # 8

Keep your stone clean but oiled. A dirty stone full of grit and metal filings is disagreeable and makes for an unpleasant experience. Sharpening one's blade should be pleasant, it should be meditative, a rewarding act in and of itself. In this way, you will want to do it again and again; your blade will be ready for you when you need to use it.
